First Female Robot in Africa

Artificial intelligence (AI) has recently incorporated itself into our daily lives in ways that we might not even be aware of. It has spread so far that many people are still oblivious to its effects and how much we depend on it.

Our daily activities are mostly driven by AI technology from morning to night. Many of us pick up our laptops or cell phone as soon as we wake up to begin our day. Our decision-making, planning, and information-seeking processes now all automatically include doing this.

When we turn on our devices, we immediately connect to AI features like:

  • face ID and image recognition
  • emails
  • apps
  • social media
  • Google search
  • digital voice assistants like Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa
  • online banking
  • driving aids – route mapping, traffic updates, weather conditions
  • shopping
  • leisure downtime – such as Netflix and Amazon for films and programmes

The first humanoid robot in Africa, known as "Omeife," was created by the Nigerian tech company Uniccon Group in Abuja. Igbo, English, French, Arabic, Kiswahili, Pidgin, Wazobia, and Afrikaans are among the eight languages that Omeife, a 6-foot-tall robot that resembles a human, can speak.

Omeife is managed by artificial intelligence created in Nigeria by scientists from Uniccon. The robot's concept emerged in 2020 and has been under development ever since. Because artificial intelligence (AI) can respond instantly to voice and terrain cues as well as conversation.

Omeife can grip objects and maneuver on flat surfaces. Even though robots are being developed to perform human labor, the process has been slow thus far, with Tesla CEO Elon Musk's "Optimus" being another example. The robot can hardly handle tasks that humans can.

The CEO claims that Omeife is designed more for intellectual skills than for labour.

Before Omeife, numerous African humanoid robot projects were under development, but Uniccon Group is the first to declare its completion.

The business intends to mass-build the robot and sell it for at least $30,000.
