Hansen Leadership Institute in the United States of America

An innovative worldwide leadership program is supported by a generous grant from the Fred J. Hansen Foundation called the Hansen Leadership Institute 2023 in the USA, formerly known as the Hansen Summer Institute for Leadership and International Cooperation. The training at the Hansen Leadership Institute seeks to give participants a "toolbox of leadership skills" for resolving issues and creating a brighter future for their own countries as well as the world at large.
Each July, young people from conflict zones and the United States converge on the campus of the University of San Diego for three weeks as part of this life-altering program. They become a part of the Hansen Alumni community, which keeps in touch with each other via various media and social media websites.
The Hansen Leadership Institute's main objective is to establish an international community of young academics who will use their summer experience as a foundation for making enduring connections and developing shared practical skills and training for the construction of a more peaceful future.
The HLI 2023 program offers both classroom education and practical training outside of the classroom in the most recent methods of negotiation, mediation, and management of cross-cultural relationships. Local excursions to historical sites and cultural activities in San Diego, such as visits to Sea World, Balboa Park, a Fourth of July parade, a harbor cruise, and the US-Mexico border, are supplemented by classroom instruction.

Eligibility requirements for the USA's Hansen Leadership Institute in 2023:
Candidates must satisfy the following qualifying requirements in order to attend the Hansen Summer Institute:
NON – U.S. STUDENTS: (from zones of conflict and/or social strife)
Upper-division undergraduate with 2 years of college/university or graduate student with a professional interest in international relations, diplomacy, international economic development, or related fields.
Students must be between the ages of 20-25 at the start of the program.
Must have demonstrated leadership potential outside of the classroom in the community, nation, or region.
Have an academic adviser verify in writing the candidate’s English proficiency
Have a valid international passport with a U.S. visa, if necessary, by the time the program begins
Preference will be given to those who have never visited the United States
U.S. STUDENTS: (Students from any university in the United States)

Visit the Hansen Leadership Institute Scholarship Application Portal and fill out the online application form.
New Applicants/First Time Users: Click the “Create New Account” button below in order to begin a new application.
Existing Applicants: Enter your Username and Password to complete the application. (Your username is the email address and password you initially used to set up your account.)
Forgot Password: Click on “Forgot Password” and enter your login email address to reset your password. Once complete, an email will be sent to you that asks you to reset your password. You will receive a confirmation email once you’ve successfully reset your password.
